Dubai: A vehicle cleaner has denied the charges of raping his ex-girlfriend in a bus and threatening to make her nude pictures public if she complained about him, a court heard.

Public Prosecution records allege N.R., the 23-year-old Sri Lankan cleaner, lured his 24-year-old Myanmarese "girlfriend" to a spot promising to return her pictures and forced her into a bus where he reportedly undressed and raped her.

"I am not guilty and I didn't rape her& she is my girlfriend and we had consensual sex in the bus," said the accused defending himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday.

The arraignment sheet said N.R. took naked pictures of the victim and threatened to make them public if she reported him to the police.

When Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad confronted him, N.R. replied: "I am innocent your honour. I didn't do all of that. It's a malicious complaint& as far as I know, she was willing to waive her complaint and she has left the country."

The court secretary, Essam Ali Mohammad, then informed the judge that the file contained the victim's waiver.

The victim, a waitress, had testified that she had become friends with the suspect who used to work with her in a coffee shop.

Her 30-year-old compatriot, also a waitress, confirmed that she spoke to the suspect on phone around 3:30am.

"I phoned her because she was late& the suspect answered my call and I heard her crying for help in our language," stated the witness.

The trial continues.
